The first of its kind in the State of Nebraska, CS Precision Manufacturing has deployed a behind-the-meter microgrid to help offset the energy consumption of its manufacturing plant in Gering. With 1,560 550-watt solar modules and 3 BYD-Chess 120kW energy storage units, the microgrid reduces the facility’s peak demand, which occurs when manufacturing equipment is operated.
CS Precision Manufacturing began looking at solar power as a viable option to subsidize energy consumption several years ago.” CEO Scott James, “It quickly became apparent that the numerous benefits of solar power extend far beyond those of a financial nature. Environmental benefits, partial energy independence, stable energy costs, and community responsibility are key factors that have driven our decision to implement a solar field. Solar power is a clean, renewable energy source that emits zero greenhouse gases. By reducing our reliance on traditional energy sources, we will minimize our carbon footprint and aid in the battle against climate change.
“Before converting the facility to solar, CS Precision hired renewable energy developer GenPro Energy to conduct a feasibility study. “When we started the project back in 2020, there was very little interval data available from the utility,” said Molly Brown, who started developing the project for GenPro. “We installed dataloggers at each utility service and collected 1-minute interval data for an entire year.”
Once the interval data had been collected and uploaded for analysis, other technical items needed to be addressed. The facility had four different electric services. GenPro worked with the City of Gering electric utility and its wholesale provider, the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska, to reconfigure the facility’s interconnection to the distribution grid.
CS Precision Manufacturing will achieve greater energy independence than traditional energy sources by generating solar energy. The system’s design, which stores energy and utilizes it when demand is heightened, will offset peak usage times.
Solar power helps make energy costs more predictable than traditional fossil fuel- based sources. Conventional energy sources depend on the economy and are subject to unexpected increases. Solar power also provides a much more stable cost structure.
CS Precision Manufacturing continually strives to find ways to become more efficient, sustainable, and cost-conscious. Solar power is one mechanism that can help CS Precision remain competitive with foreign companies while providing the best service possible. The company’s backbone is its dedication to creating quality products made in the USA by employees from Western Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming.
About CS Precision:
CS Precision Manufacturing, Inc., was founded in 2000 to meet the demanding requirements of today’s metal machining customers. Located in the heart of the United States, our state-of-the-art 73,000-square-foot manufacturing facility specializes in a wide array of hydraulic couplings. Our products are widely used in a variety of industries: construction, agricultural, mining, oil, industrial equipment, and more.
About GenPro Energy Development:
GenPro Energy Solutions has been at the forefront of the solar industry in the Great Plains, tackling undeveloped markets such as Nebraska and South Dakota to create distributed generation solutions that make financial sense to investors and, most importantly, to the communities where our projects are located. Named the #1 solar contractor in Nebraska for the 2023 Solar Power World’s Top Contractors list, GenPro’s project spans from Scottsbluff to Fremont. In 2022, GenPro Energy Solutions spun off our development arm as a newly formed LLC in partnership with The Jim Thares Revocable Trust.
